Matina River Overflowing in Costa Rica

Costa Rica News – The Government of Carlos Alvarado promised to intervene in Matina to stop the river overflows.

This was when the president visited the Caribbean and Turrialba to asses the damage caused on the weekend by downpours, floods and landslides.

274 people still remain in the three authorized shelters. One woman explained that in just an hour the water reached their waists so nothing could be rescued. Additionally, a tree fell on her house so she and her children are unable to go home. They are receiving food and shelter at the school.

Two temporary intervention routes are in process but a long term improvement is needed. There is not yet a timeframe or funds for this. The National Commission of Emergencies explains that the basic studies for a definitive solution must be accelerated.

The Chirripó River frequently returns water to Matina because there is too much water pressure and no where for the water to go. One neighbor recommends removing sediment from the river to reduce the problem.
