An Urban Face Lift to San Jose Neighborhoods

Costa Rica News – San Jose neighborhoods are changing faces this year. The City Council has invested ¢95 million in improvements to public spaces.

The Municipality is also encouraging companies to join the Friends of the Parks, Amigas y Amigos de los Parques, program.

Some of the improvements include renovating parks in various districts and revitalizing public spaces, equipping them for the needs of the communities. The idea is that the lungs of the city should be a true place of respite to travelers and locals, allowing rest from the busy streets.

Efforts include gardening, making trails, outdoor gymnasiums, playgrounds and fixing seating and tables. The hope is that these parks will be more presentable and offer spaces for all ages.

There are 389 parks in the central canton, maintained by taxes. The funds are not sufficient so the focus is on those in most urgent need of help due to deterioration.

The Parks Intervention Strategy also includes reforestation, lighting, and provision of security elements.
