Costa Rica News – Following raids in Crucitas, 300 foreigners were sent to the border with Nicaragua due to irregular migratory status, 100 people were arrested and 4 were placed in the care of child services, due to their age.
This is part of the effort to combat gold mining and damage to the environment.
The official penalty for exploration or mining exploitation without permission or a concession is three months to five years, according to the mining code.
The police seized gold, mercury, vehicles, motorcycles and a firearm.
Previously, they took 186 people and over 50 tools such as shovels, picks, sieves, buckets and machetes, all used for the extraction of gold.
Locals and foreigners are coming in great numbers desperate to make money mining.
The police are working to find out how and with whom this recent influx of Nicaraguans is coming in, following news of gold.
