Fuel To Be Extracted From Ship Stranded of Costa Rica Coast

Costa Rica News – The government is expecting to extract fuel from a stranded ship in Manzanillo, weather permitting, this afternoon.

If the weather is bad, it might have to wait until tomorrow.

The transfer process will be complicated.

Seven public institutions are involved in the process: the Costa Rican Petroleum Refinery, the Port Administration and Economic Development Board of the Atlantic Coast, Firemen, the National Emergency Commission, the Minae, the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation and the Public Force.

The National Meteorological Institute indicates that the winds should diminish by this afternoon, allowing the operation to start. The Minae estimates that the task will take 18 hours.

The boat has been stranded in the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge since December 8th. It stores 1,600 gallons of diesel and 15 liters of hydraulic oil, which may spill over into the sea if not removed soon.
